Neon breaks new ground in digital news creation and delivery

A new digital news platform from Eidosmedia uses cutting-edge technologies to enhance productivity and quality in cross-platform news operations.

Milan, Italy. April 1st, 2025

“The way people consume news is changing fast. Digital technology is changing even faster. Neon aims to keep news producers ahead of both of these developments,“ said Massimo Barsotti, Eidosmedia CMO.

Neon is an advanced digital news platform that uses emerging technologies to raise both the productivity and the quality of multi-channel, multi-site news operations.

“To build audience, today’s news producers need to appeal across the demographic,” said Massimo. ”That means making news content available in multiple channels and formats from web-pages to mobile apps, audio, video and social.”

“The pressure on authors and editors to feed this funnel is enormous. Neon leaves them free to concentrate on crafting compelling content by automating the many routine tasks involved in multichannel workflows. The result is an increase in both the speed and quality of news output.”

Full AI integration

“AI models have become a dime a dozen,” said Massimo, “but to deliver real productivity benefits they need to become an integral part of the workflow and use carefully engineered prompts.“

Neon’s AI tools are accessible ‘in line’. Without leaving the workspace, authors insert summaries, headline variants, bullet points, rephrasing and translations. At the proofing stage, AI tools replace a lot of manual editing, ensuring that language is correct and in line with ‘house style’.

“Because AI models are emerging and evolving fast, we’ve taken an ‘agnostic’ approach to model choice,” said Massimo. “Users can set each tool to use the LLM they prefer – even integrating local models in the case of confidential content.”

One-click publishing and channel management

“Users often waste a lot of time adapting their stories for different channels or devices,” said Massimo. “With Neon, a simple click formats and delivers the content to any digital destination.”

Page and channel management is also handled by automated routines, selecting stories for publication in specific locations and retiring them after a suitable period.

“This allows carefully curated online news collections to be created and managed by Neon with minimal manual intervention,” said Massimo.

Headless architecture and integration

Neon uses a ‘headless’ architecture,” said Aureliano Ventrella, Eidosmedia Product Manager, “meaning that it leaves developers completely free to use any ‘front-end’ technology they prefer.”

Customizable JSON output is channeled by Neon‘s bidirectional API’s to a full spectrum of digital destinations from web pages to mobile apps, audio and video formats and social media.

“Integrations and extensions use the same flexible approach,” said Aureliano. “We see the modern news platform as the central node in a digital pipeline comprising diverse yet interconnected solutions.”

Thanks to its advanced APIs and web hooks, Neon interfaces easily with third-party apps to take advantage of best-of-breed solutions for analytics, CRM, paywalls and other tools and add-ins.

Cloud containerization - stability and scalability

“Cloud hosting is now recognized as the most efficient and cost-effective choice for news platforms, “ said Aureliano. “By choosing a cloud-native containerized solution for Neon, we’ve streamlined deployment and maintenance, creating an exceptionally stable, scalable platform.”

Backward compatibility

“We recognise that many adopters will already be users of Eidosmedia platforms,” said Aureliano. ”We’ve therefore made ease of upgrade and integration a development priority.”

“We’re very excited about the new platform,“ said Christian Pelanconi, Eidosmedia CEO. “Neon is an important continuation of our mission of the last twenty years: maximizing the performance and reach of news portfolios through powerful, practical digital solutions."
